Berlin Exchange 10/10/12 - 10/17/12

Berlin Exchange 10/10/12 – 10/17/12:

Berlin has regarded itself as a city of knowledge and culture since the days of Friedrich the Great in the 18th century. The political and cultural developments of the 19th and 20th century are visible throughout Berlin’s cityscape, reflecting both the history of architecture and various approaches to dealing with the consequences of war and destruction. It is interesting to note that Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm (Grimm’s fairy tales), and Albert Einstein are considered to be ‘Berliners’. During the time of our exchange, we will also get to experience the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS where many famous buildings are lit up after dark. Plans for the home stay include guided tours, public transportation, a day trip to Potsdam and lunch on days with group programs. The exchange cost also includes a ticket to the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra (schedule permitting).

Exchange Cost is $575.00. Additional cost includes Airfare and luggage fees, FF membership, FF Greater Harrisburg Polo Shirt ($25) which we will wear in solidarity at several functions, possibly some meals during the exchange and of course, we as visiting ambassadors make plans during our ‘free day’ to take our home hosts for dinner as a thank you for their hospitality.

Payment schedule: $100 deposit ($25 non-refundable) Due by 1/31/12 (will stay open until they have 20 participants)

$200 Due by 3/31/12

Balance Due by 6/30/12 ($275 + $25 polo shirt & FF dues if applicable w/name badge)

Please send ambassador application and checks payable to FF Greater Harrisburg to:

Lisa Cordell, Berlin ED, 10 Bradi Dr Carlisle, PA 17015

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Airport and transfers

At the time our exchange will be held, Berlin will have only one airport (instead of three as before). Berlin-Brandenburg International or Willy-Brandt Airport is at the south edge of Berlin and will have the international airport code BER. It will officially be open on June 3, 2012. Hosts usually meet their ambassadors at the airport and transport them to their homes by private cars. Exact meeting point at the airport will be determined.

Proposed Itinerary

  • Wednesday 10th of October: Arrival in Berlin - remainder of the day free for hosts and ambassadors. Depending on arrival time, maybe some program

  • Saturday 13th of October: late afternoon Party with all hosts and guests and other members of Berlin FF club, maybe around midday some program

  • Sunday 14th of October: free for hosts and ambassadors

  • Wednesday 17th of October: Departure. Usually this is a free day for hosts and ambassadors, depending on the time of departure we could opt for breakfast together

Tours and programming planned for Thursday 11th, Friday 12th, Monday 15th, Tuesday 16th are flexible at the moment. Exact itinerary for these dates will not be set when tour arrangements are made but may include:

  • One day in Potsdam including Sanssouci, Cecilienhof (Truman, Churchill and Stalin met here in 1945 after WWII), Alexandrowska (Russian section), Dutch Quarter and maybe a boat trip back to Berlin

  • Three days in Berlin will include visits to:
    • The Jewish Museum, Reichstags building, KaDaWe Department Store, Television Tower, Berlin Cathedral, Kaiser-Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche, Allied museum, East Side Gallery (Wall), Wall exhibition, Olympic stadium (built for the 1936 Olympics) and a visit to Tempelhof airfield – known for its role during the airlift. We will include a sightseeing tour by night during the Festival of Lights, a guided tour to the Philharmonic and the Museum of Music instruments, and perhaps a visit to the Berlin Zoo, a Jewish synagogue, a mosque and a Turkish market.

Aside from tours, additional exchange programming will include a private dinner party or perhaps a progressive dinner to give us the opportunity to learn more about each other. This program will be managed mainly by public transportation, which will provide us with interesting views from the U-Train, tram, bus, and the S-Bahn.
