Purpose and goals of the “Book Fund” for German students at York College: Article II of the By-Laws (constitution) of the German American Society of York – Alpenrose states: “The purpose of the society is to maintain and foster, as far as it is possible and feasible, the German language, customs, songs and to promote a true spirit of sociability.” To accomplish these objectives, the society holds several “German” dances and traditional “German” celebrations every year. The society also schedules trips to other “German” events held in the local area and surrounding states. In addition, the society established a “Book Fund” in 1994 with a donation of one-thousand dollars to York College. This fund has since grown to almost ten-thousand dollars. Each year, a portion of this fund is awarded to qualifying student(s) who are studying the German language, in order to help offset the cost of their text books. The long range goal of the society is to increase the value of this fund to a point where York College could potentially offer a full college scholarship to a qualifying German language student. This fund was not established as the sole property of the German American Society of York. Anyone wishing to promote German culture is encouraged to contribute to this fund. One example is Prof. Heinz Hosch of York College, who regularly contributes his personal honorariums to this fund. Through the continued growth of this fund, the German American Society of York hopes to not only promote German culture, but to assist in the growth of higher education at York College, in city of York and the state of Pennsylvania. ENTERTAINMENT AT NORMANDY RIDGE ON GERMAN-AMERICAN DAY October 6, 2005 This is the second year we had been asked to entertain the residents of Normandy Ridge. Our program was well attended and many residents told us how much they enjoyed the program and asked us to be sure to come back soon. Ann Lewis brought her dog, Fritz. Al and Dawn Langis brought their grandsons. These youngsters, our future, were both so attentive and participated in the Chicken Dance, as well as serving the residents with snacks. Soda and what else, but soft pretzels! Also attending were: Jim & Dee Hackett, Harry & Nancy Shermeyer, and Pierce & Betty Sherman. Thank you, all. This is a great experience. I urge you to participate when given this opportunity. Community Service is very appreciated. |
